Lights Out!

Could it be simpler?  Heck no!  Just turn the lights out when you leave a room.  Even if it’s only for 5 seconds.

Forget what your parents or grandparents taught you.  If fluorescent lights are off for 5 seconds or more, it pays to turn them off… and… with no loss of life for the fluorescent tubes.  At least that applies to the fluorescents from the past 20 years or so.

If yours are older than that, I suggest going to some newer varieties… such as the T8 version.  Replace those old T12 tubes and magnetic ballasts with T8’s and electronic ballasts.  45% savings, folks.
